Landmark facade restoration, copper roofing and terrace assemblies at historic Steinway Hall, incorporated into the development of 111 West 57th Street.
About the Project
Steinway Hall is the landmarked 1920s building at the base of 111 West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Designed by Warren & Wetmore and clad in Indiana limestone, the building was preserved as part of the development of the new residential tower above it.
KNS restored the historic exterior and installed new roofing and terrace assemblies across the property. The scope included restoration of the landmarked limestone facade, ornate standing-seam copper roofing and a conventional IRMA roofing system with a lockdown Hanover paver assembly.
The work brought historic restoration and new building-envelope construction together on one of Manhattan’s most recognizable developments.

A Closer Look at the Transformation
Where Historic Restoration Meets New Construction
111 West 57th Street combines the landmarked Steinway Hall with a new residential tower rising above it. KNS’s work addressed the building envelope at that intersection, restoring historic exterior materials while installing new roofing and terrace assemblies.
At Steinway Hall, KNS restored the Indiana limestone facade and installed ornate standing-seam copper roofing at the historic roofline. The work required new construction to respond to the geometry, materials and architectural character of the landmarked building.
KNS also installed a conventional IRMA roofing assembly with a lockdown Hanover paver system, creating a separate roofing and terrace condition within the same overall envelope.
Because Steinway Hall is a designated New York City landmark, exterior restoration work is subject to Landmarks Preservation Commission review and approval. KNS executed its restoration scope within those requirements while working as part of the larger 111 West 57th Street development.
