Landmark facade restoration and reconstruction of the historic rooftop tempietto at 9 Orchard Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
About the Project
Built in 1912 at the corner of Orchard and Canal Streets, the Jarmulowsky Bank Building is an individual New York City landmark and one of the Lower East Side’s most recognizable historic buildings. Its conversion into Nine Orchard required extensive restoration of an exterior that had lost several of its defining architectural elements over time.
KNS restored the historic facade, including original limestone, brick and terra cotta, and completed new roofing and paver work across the building. At the roofline, KNS also carried out the reconstruction of the landmark cupola, copper dome and spire, returning the building’s original crown to the Lower East Side skyline.
2021 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award The restoration of Nine Orchard received a Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

A Closer Look at the Transformation
Returning the Crown to the Skyline
The original Jarmulowsky Bank Building was crowned by a circular rooftop pavilion that made the building a prominent feature of the Lower East Side skyline. The structure was removed in 1990, leaving the landmark without one of its most recognizable architectural features.
As part of the building’s restoration, the cupola was reconstructed using historic photographs and documentation as reference. KNS executed the exterior restoration and reconstruction of the cupola, copper dome and spire, culminating in the return of the building’s historic silhouette more than three decades after the original crown disappeared.
