A Closer Look at the Transformation

Originally constructed in 1912 as the Jarmulowsky Bank Building, 9 Orchard Street has been a cornerstone of the Lower East Side’s architectural and cultural heritage. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by architects Rouse & Goldstone, the 12-story building featured a distinctive tempietto—a domed rooftop structure inspired by classical monuments. The bank, founded by Jewish immigrant Sender Jarmulowsky, served the local immigrant community until its closure during World War I. After decades of varied use, including garment manufacturing and other commercial purposes, the building underwent a meticulous restoration and reopened in 2022 as the Nine Orchard Hotel, preserving its historic grandeur while offering modern luxury accommodations.
